
Despite the fact that symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder tend to appear during the first month after the traumatic event, sometimes it takes months or even years until the first symptoms of this condition may appear. For some people, the intensity of the symptoms may vary from one period to another, whereas for others the symptoms tend to be constant.
The most frequent type of PTSD is re-experiencing. This may manifest in the form of flashbacks, repetitive and distressful sensations or images, nightmares and physical pain, such as trembling, sweating or feeling nauseous.
At the same time, people suffering from PTSD may be wondering why the event happened to them and ask themselves how they could have done anything to stop it. This self-questioning is often accompanied by shame and guilt.
Trying to avoid remembering the traumatic event is another key symptom of PTSD. This includes avoiding certain places and people that remind one of the traumatic event and also unwillingness to talk about what happened. Emotional numbness is yet another common symptom, which refers to people who shut down their emotions completely, thriving not to feel anything, so as to avoid the pain. Irritability, sometimes aggressive outbursts and concentration-related issues can be yet some other PTSD symptoms.
